Pope Leo XIV on Friday set 7 September 2025 for the canonization of Blesseds Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, confirming the date during an Ordinary Public Consistory at the Vatican. The ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica will be the first sainthood proclamation of the new pontificate and will bring two Italian laymen to the ranks of Catholic saints. The event had originally been scheduled for 27 April but was postponed after the death of Pope Francis earlier this year. By fixing a new date, the Vatican has put back on track one of the most closely watched moments in the Church’s 2025 calendar. Acutis, who died in 2006 at the age of 15 following a short battle with leukemia, gained international attention for using his programming skills to build an online catalogue of more than 100 eucharistic miracles. His canonization will make him the first Catholic saint drawn from the millennial generation, underscoring the Church’s effort to engage younger believers. Frassati, who died in 1925 at 24, was renowned for his charitable outreach to the poor and his leadership in Catholic social action. Beatified in 1990 by Pope John Paul II, he is widely venerated by student and young adult groups, and will now be elevated alongside Acutis.
