Daily market recaps with key events, stock movements, and global influences
Thousands of demonstrators marched in Paris and dozens of other French cities on 14 June after unions and left-wing parties, including the Parti Socialiste, Europe Écologie-Les Verts and La France Insoumise, called for a nationwide day of action to demand an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and recognition of a Palestinian state. Organisers said about 150,000 people gathered at the main rally on Place de la République in Paris, while national broadcaster Franceinfo reported turnout in the ‘several-thousand’ range. In the capital, the Statue of the Republic was covered with Palestinian colours and the nearby City Hall of Saint-Denis flew the Palestinian flag. Parallel marches were held in Marseille, Lyon, Strasbourg and other urban centres under the slogan “Free Gaza,” with speakers urging an arms embargo on Israel and the suspension of European cooperation agreements with the country. The demonstrations were galvanised by the return to France of Rima Hassan, an LFI member of the European Parliament who was expelled from Israel earlier in the week after attempting to reach Gaza aboard the aid vessel Madleen with 11 other passengers. Speaking to supporters in Paris, Hassan—who spent three days in Israeli detention—vowed to send “as many boats as necessary” to break the Gaza blockade. Saturday’s protests extend months of French mobilisation over the war in Gaza and come ahead of additional actions, including a planned march from Paris to Brussels aimed at pressuring European institutions. Union leaders said further strikes and blockades remain on the table if their demands for a cease-fire and humanitarian access are not met.
