The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the UN Peacebuilding Commission held a joint meeting to address the escalating security crisis in Haiti, marked by increased gang violence and its impact on regional stability. UN officials, including BINUH's Special Representative Maria Isabel Salvador and the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission, emphasized that security measures alone are insufficient and called for the reinstatement of Haiti's Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) commission. They urged Haitian leaders to prioritize public security, anti-corruption efforts, and accountability to end impunity. Germany also highlighted the crisis as a threat to stabilization and development, advocating for combined efforts in development, peacebuilding, and national ownership. Meanwhile, in Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered 318 agricultural machines to 301 municipalities in Minas Gerais as part of the Promaq program aimed at modernizing agricultural production. Lula participated in the Brazil-Caribbean Summit in Brasília, where he announced a US$5 million investment in the Caribbean Development Bank's Special Development Fund to support vulnerable countries. He also highlighted Brazil's commitment to biocombustibles as a sustainable energy option and announced that the Brazilian Federal Police will train 400 members of the Haitian National Police to help stabilize security and facilitate upcoming presidential elections in Haiti. Lula acknowledged the fluctuating nature of Brazil-Caribbean relations and emphasized efforts to strengthen ties in commerce and tourism.
