Israeli Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Amir Baram has formally announced his intention to resign from his position at the end of February 2025. Baram, who was initially asked to extend his two-year tenure by an additional six months due to the ongoing conflict, communicated his decision to Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi in a letter dated December 30, 2024. In his resignation letter, Baram cited the diminishing intensity of the war as a primary reason for his departure. Despite stepping down, Baram plans to compete for the position of Chief of Staff in the future. His resignation is expected to create indirect pressure on Halevi, as the next Chief of Staff will likely choose their deputy. The current atmosphere within the military leadership is described as one of unprecedented distrust, despite claims of a normal working relationship between Baram and Halevi.
