Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya on 13 June denounced Israel’s strikes on Iranian targets, describing the use of military force as “extremely regrettable” and saying Tokyo “strongly condemns” the action. Iwaya urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, noted that no Japanese nationals had been harmed, and stressed that peace and stability in the Middle East are of critical importance to Japan. He pledged that the government would take all necessary measures to protect its citizens in the region. Pakistan issued a separate statement the same day, with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the Foreign Office calling the Israeli attacks “unjustified and illegitimate” and a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Islamabad expressed full solidarity with Tehran, affirmed Iran’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, and urged the international community to prevent further escalation. The coordinated rebukes from Tokyo and Islamabad add to growing diplomatic fallout after Israel reportedly struck Iranian nuclear facilities and other sites earlier on Thursday. Both governments warned that additional military action could further destabilize an already tense region.
