United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 13–14 June urged Israel and Iran to halt their rapidly intensifying confrontation, declaring, “Enough escalation. Time to stop. Peace and diplomacy must prevail.” His statement followed reports of Israeli air strikes on Iranian nuclear installations and subsequent Iranian missile attacks on Tel Aviv. Deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said Guterres is “particularly concerned” that the hostilities have reached nuclear facilities at a moment when Tehran and Washington are holding talks on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme. The UN chief called on both parties to exercise “maximum restraint” and resolve their differences through dialogue rather than force. The United Nations appeal was repeated at an emergency meeting of senior officials, as governments across the region warned that further blows could trigger a wider conflict. No casualty figures were immediately available, and the UN stressed that safeguarding civilian lives and critical infrastructure must remain the priority.
