Trump Administration Freezes Harvard Grants, Cancels $2.2 Billion in NIH Funding

The Trump administration has intensified its clash with Harvard University, declaring the institution ineligible for any new federal research grants, according to the U.S. Education Department.

In a letter dated Monday, Education Secretary Linda McMahon told Harvard President Alan Garber that the Ivy League school had "made a mockery" of higher education and would not receive further federal support until it met White House demands addressing antisemitism, academic standards and campus governance.

The suspension covers all agencies, freezing billions of dollars in prospective awards. The White House is also weighing revocation of Harvard’s tax-exempt status, further raising financial and reputational stakes for the university.

On 7 May, the National Institutes of Health escalated the dispute by cancelling $2.2 billion in previously approved grants, according to a letter sent to Garber and reported by several outlets.

Garber told The Wall Street Journal that Harvard will challenge what he described as "illegal government overreach." The university has yet to outline how it will replace the lost funding or manage ongoing research projects.
