President William Ruto has appointed a 129-member committee to review the controversial new university funding model. The model has faced criticism for increasing the cost of education and disadvantaging students from poor backgrounds. Concurrently, protests have erupted at Multimedia University over water scarcity and poor hygiene, leading to transport disruptions on Magadi Road and the arrest of four students after police used teargas. Additionally, Kabete National Polytechnic students have gone on strike over increased exam fees and changes in the dress code, resulting in the ejection of their principal. A nationwide strike by university lecturers, organized by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), has paralyzed learning in all 35 public universities, including the Technical University of Mombasa. The lecturers are protesting low pay, delayed salaries, non-remittance of statutory deductions, and the lack of a comprehensive medical cover. University of Nairobi students have issued a 14-day strike notice over the new loan scheme.
