The USDA has confirmed new detections of H5N1 avian influenza in dairy herds, with recent cases reported in Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, and Iowa. The total number of affected herds has risen to 139 across 12 states, including 129 herds previously reported. Iowa has reported two additional infected herds, bringing its state total to 13. Idaho also reported its 28th infected herd. In response to the outbreak, the USDA will begin accepting applications for financial assistance through its updated ELAP program starting July 1, to help dairy producers offset milk losses due to H5N1. This initiative follows calls from Iowa's congressional delegation for increased support and resources to combat the spread of the virus. Nearly 25% of the 100 million birds impacted by bird flu have been in Iowa. The USDA report indicates that transmission is likely occurring through workers, cows, vehicles, and equipment moving between farms.
