The U.S. State Department on Monday upgraded Vietnam's ranking in its human trafficking report, despite ongoing concerns about the country's failure to investigate government officials complicit in trafficking crimes. The 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report also saw Malaysia upgraded from the Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 2, while Brunei was downgraded from the Tier 2 Watch List to Tier 3 and placed on a human trafficking blacklist. Sudan was also moved to the blacklist. Additionally, Thailand and Indonesia remain in Tier 2, while Singapore and the Philippines are in Tier 1. The report highlighted improvements by Algeria, Egypt, and South Africa, but warned that technology was exacerbating the global trafficking problem.
