There is an urgent call to address the alarming rise in seafarer abandonment within the logistics, shipping, and freight industries. Last year, over 2,000 sailors were abandoned without pay in ports around the world, marking the highest number on record. Many of these seafarers, left aboard aging cargo ships, are unable to leave due to lack of visas and cannot afford to return home. Abdul Saleh, for instance, spent a decade waiting for wages on a ship docked at ports along the Red Sea. The UN has logged an increasing number of such cases, with more than 2,000 seafarers on approximately 150 ships abandoned last year. This crisis often stems from shipowners running into financial difficulties, leading to prolonged periods without pay for the crew.
Good grief! "The UN has logged an increasing number of crew members abandoned by shipowners, leaving sailors aboard months and sometimes years without pay. More than 2,000 seafarers on some 150 ships were abandoned last year." Great work, @helenwieffering @APjoshgoodman @AP https://t.co/w3APZ6XvHo
More than 2,000 sailors were abandoned without pay last year in ports around the world – the highest number on record. Without visas, many of the seafarers can’t leave their ships. And without money, they can’t return home. W/ @helenwieffering https://t.co/Ev8aBsd2if

Abdul Saleh spent a decade waiting for wages on an aging cargo ship docked at ports along the Red Sea. He tossed and turned in his bunk, thinking of the unpaid wages he feared he’d never see if he left the ship. Eye-opening tale w/ @helenwieffering https://t.co/Ev8aBsd2if
