The United States Supreme Court has ruled in a 6-3 decision that the federal bribery statute does not criminalize after-the-fact gratuities given to public officials. This ruling, which follows ideological lines, means that state and local officials who accept gratuities after performing official acts are not in violation of federal bribery laws. The decision has sparked debate and concern about its implications for anti-corruption efforts, with critics arguing that it effectively legalizes a form of bribery. The ruling also pares back a public corruption law.

The Supreme Court has ruled that it’s OK for politicians to take bribes — as long as they’re received after the official doles out the favor. This absurd ruling is only the latest of the court’s decisions to undermine anti-corruption law. https://t.co/9FFkMsKLfR

The Supreme Court again pared back a public corruption law, this time saying that state and local officials who accept “gratuities” aren’t covered by a federal bribery statute. https://t.co/gkcipgdcmv
I cannot believe in a 6-3 decision, the supreme court made bribery of a public official legal as long as it is done as a "gratuity" AND done after the fact. I loved when people had faith in our public institutions. Now, who knows how your tax dollars are being used.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 opinion along ideological lines found the law criminalizes bribes given before an official act, not rewards handed out after. More from @lwhitehurst: https://t.co/OQbLjFcdat
Public officials can take “gratuities” so long as they are paid after official acts are performed? We can assume this new rule applies to Supreme Court justices too…. Anti-corruption laws: Supreme Court sides with mayor accused of accepting a bribe https://t.co/U73iRDFxCk
