South Korea is planning a significant expansion of its nuclear power capacity as part of a broader strategy to achieve 70% carbon-free power generation by 2038. According to a new government proposal, the country aims to add 4.9 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2038, in addition to the 5.6 GW currently under construction. This initiative is driven by the need to curb emissions and meet the increasing energy demand from sectors such as data centers and semiconductor manufacturing. The proposal also includes a sharp reduction in the share of LNG in the power mix and a substantial increase in renewable energy sources, including tripling solar and wind generation. South Korea aims for nuclear to be the largest power source by 2038.
THE NUCLEAR RESURGENCE IS AMONG US💪 For the last decade+ the nuclear conversation has centered around the promise of SMRs/advanced reactors and dismissing the deployment of the "old large reactors" - but no longer! The expected demand growth for energy we are facing needs bold… https://t.co/MyWwZrD5Xs
Korea plans to generate 70% of its power from clean, carbon-free sources by 2038, vs. ~40% today. The plans include four more nuclear plants, and tripling of its solar and wind generation to 72 GW by 2038 (equivalent to ~20 GW of nuclear). Article link in reply. https://t.co/FJRts7hGeo
