Business bankruptcies are on the rise, with many of the troubled companies being large corporations. In 2023, there have been 516 corporate bankruptcies, double the YTD total in 2022 and 39% more than the entire 2022 count. This level of bankruptcies is comparable to 2020 when the global economy was shut down. Bankruptcies are primarily affecting companies with high levels of debt and low earnings in the Consumer discretionary, Healthcare, and Industrials sectors. Additionally, small business bankruptcies are also increasing. Debt payments from lower income countries are expected to reach a 25-year high by the end of 2023, with 54 countries experiencing debt crises. The New York State Legislature has the power to prevent Wall Street from taking advantage of this situation.
