A new study has found that rhesus macaques on Monkey Island in Puerto Rico became more tolerant and cooperative after Hurricane Maria devastated their island home in the Caribbean. Traditionally known for their strict social hierarchies maintained through aggression and competition, the macaques adapted to the ecological disturbance by forming stronger social ties. The study, published in Science Magazine, indicates that the adaptive benefits of social ties increased following the hurricane, allowing more tolerant macaques to better survive the challenging conditions.

Macaques, reeling from a hurricane, learned by necessity to get along, a study found. It’s one of the first to suggest that animals can adapt to environmental upheaval with social changes. https://t.co/wACRKU6q9c
We’ll see, and soon, now, if humans have these same adaptive skills. “Macaques, reeling from a hurricane, learned by necessity to get along, a study found~one of the first to suggest that animals can adapt to environmental upheaval with social changes” https://t.co/3UxYYX1NHD
