Swedish battery manufacturing company, Northvolt, has announced plans to build a multibillion-dollar electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Quebec, Canada. The initial phase of the project will have a battery cell manufacturing capacity of up to 30 GWh per year. The construction of the first phase is set to begin before the end of this year, with operations expected to commence in 2026. The facility will also include adjacent facilities for cathode active material production and battery recycling.

The decision to build the factory in Canada was influenced by President Biden's infrastructure plan, which aims to promote the production of clean energy and electric vehicles. The investment by Northvolt is the largest ever in the province of Quebec and is expected to create jobs and contribute to the fight against climate change. Quebec is also in talks with other battery and auto manufacturers for additional EV-related investments worth $15 billion.
