A federal jury in California has ruled that the National Football League (NFL) violated antitrust laws with its Sunday Ticket broadcast package. The jury has ordered the NFL to pay $96 million in damages to commercial establishments and $4.7 billion to residential subscribers, including 2.4 million subscribers. Under federal antitrust laws, these damages could be tripled, potentially bringing the total to over $14 billion. The lawsuit, originally filed nine years ago, claimed that the NFL conspired with DirecTV to inflate prices. The NFL has expressed disappointment with the verdict and plans to appeal the decision. Post-trial motions will be heard on July 31, and the case may eventually reach the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Hilarious that the NFL used high ratings as its defense. I’d read that as consumers feeling they *have* to pay for Sunday ticket, which drives (in part) the ratings. Textbook collusion for a forced bundle. Now do MSOffice lol. https://t.co/pTttZSKjbd

Verdict is in: NFL liable in Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit; plaintiffs awarded more than $4 billion in damages, to be trebled to over $12B. My sense is NFL will now appeal to: 1) Judge in case, arguing award excessive 2) Ninth Circuit, and if still losing, 3) Supreme Court.
