NATO has issued a warning that any deliberate damage to critical infrastructure in the alliance, such as the recent rupture of an undersea gas pipeline in Finland, would warrant a response. The pipeline, which connects Finland and Estonia, was damaged in a suspected act of sabotage. The operator of the pipeline has announced that it will take at least five months to repair. Finland has not ruled out the possibility of a state actor being involved in the damage. In addition, a telecoms cable between Estonia and Sweden has also been damaged. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that the alliance will discuss the damage and mount a determined response if a deliberate attack is proven. The Kremlin has described the damage to the gas pipeline as disturbing and mentioned the attack on the Nord Stream pipeline last year as a dangerous precedent. Power grid operators around the Baltic Sea are increasing protection of critical infrastructure in response to the suspected sabotage.
