The media industry is facing a significant downturn with a series of layoffs and closures affecting major publications. The LA Times has cut over 20% of its staff, Conde Nast has let go of 300 employees, Sports Illustrated has reduced its workforce by 100, Vox has cut another 4%, Jezebel has shut down, and Business Insider has also experienced layoffs. Additionally, Vice went bankrupt last year. These developments are part of what is being described as the 'total collapse of journalism' in the United States, with no clear plan to save the industry.

It's kind of wild to me that journalism is dying in the US and no one has an even remotely plausible plan for saving it. I feel like people have it in the back of their minds that journalism will survive somehow, that it *has* to, but it doesn't! It can die. It is dying.
