Trinidad and Tobago is grappling with a severe oil spill caused by an unidentified vessel, named by divers as the 'GULFSTREAM', that ran aground off the coast of Tobago on February 7th. The spill, affecting over 15km of Tobago's south-western coast and extending over 80 kilometres of the Caribbean Sea, has been declared a national emergency by Prime Minister Keith Rowley. Efforts to contain and clean the spill are underway, with over 1000 volunteers and multiple agencies involved, including Heritage Petroleum. The United Nations has also stepped in to assist, reallocating regional resources and being led by UN resident coordinator Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki. The spill has been classified as a Tier II disaster, but there is concern it could escalate to Tier III.
