In February, Germany reported a decrease in inflation, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising by 2.5% year-on-year, below the expected 2.6% and down from 2.9% in January, marking the lowest inflation rate since June 2021. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) also showed a year-on-year increase of 2.7%, aligning with expectations but down from 3.1% previously. On a month-on-month basis, the CPI and HICP rose by 0.4% and 0.6% respectively. The slowdown in inflation was attributed to a significant decrease in food prices, which increased by only 0.9% compared to 3.8% in the previous month, marking the lowest food inflation since December 2020. Energy prices also declined by 2.4% year-on-year. However, core CPI, excluding volatile food and energy prices, remained high at 3.4%. The data suggests that the European Central Bank (ECB) might consider lowering interest rates around the middle of the year.
