Gender Disparity in Healthcare Expenses Persists, Impacting Women's Health and Breast Cancer Care

Breast cancer rates are increasing, but more women are surviving as well. Working women spend $15.4 billion more than men in out-of-pocket health costs, according to a study. This gender disparity in healthcare expenses is not solely driven by maternity costs. In 2021, women paid about 20% more for out-of-pocket medical expenses than men, with only 2% attributed to maternity care. Women consistently have higher out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare compared to men, even when excluding maternity care. These additional expenses are particularly burdensome for women with breast cancer, potentially impacting their overall health.
