The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Louisiana, despite significant opposition from environmental advocates and some lawmakers. The decision, made by a 2-1 vote, comes after the project had been pending with the agency for over 10 months. Critics argue that the CP2 LNG project will exacerbate climate change, with emissions equivalent to 46 coal-fired power plants and the addition of more than 1.8 million gas-fueled cars on the road each year, and negatively impact marginalized communities through air pollution. Proponents, however, claim the project will boost jobs and strengthen U.S. energy independence. The approval puts pressure on President Biden, who has implemented a pause on new LNG export projects, to potentially block the terminal. The CP2 project is seen as a critical test for the administration's climate policies, with opponents also highlighting concerns about raising costs and health impacts.
It is good that FERC approved the Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) LNG project. Unfortunately, it will be kept in limbo due to the Biden admin's senseless LNG pause. @POTUS continues to undermine Americans in Louisiana and elsewhere working to make a living.
It’s a shame that FERC approved a second liquefied gas project in Louisiana. When I say lives are on the line, I’m not exaggerating. Already, from the existing plant in the area, fishermen can’t do their jobs, and black gunk coats their beaches. @ENERGY must reject the permit.
.@FERC made the wrong decision in approving CP2, and @ClementsFERC is right—this gas export terminal isn't convenient or necessary for the public. These fossil fuel exports will bring unnecessary harm, pollution, and high prices. We must stop prioritizing Big Oil over the public. https://t.co/fYVaiVVrgc
.@pewresearch says Americans are souring on wind and solar, despite the federal government artificially boosting them to the detriment of reliable power sources. https://t.co/88BI3xDaQv https://t.co/62kt9WE5e5
.@FERC prioritized sending energy to China above providing Americans with affordable energy. The approval of the climate-killing CP2 LNG export facility is a hit for our wallets, health and planet. The result? Higher energy costs for families and more climate chaos. https://t.co/ZCU72j33Zi

Strongly disagree with this decision by @FERC, which goes against @POTUS climate goals & new LNG exports pause. The CP2 LNG export project threatens our climate and environmental justice communities. Expanding fossil fuel infrastructure will accelerate climate change &… https://t.co/61w01BBAuB
Federal energy panel’s approval of huge liquefied natural gas export terminal in Louisiana puts more pressure on Biden to block it. Proposed CP2 terminal faces Biden LNG ‘pause.’ Opponents call CP2 a climate disaster; backers say it boosts jobs, US power. https://t.co/ZKWcOe5rZq
FERC's approval of the CP2 LNG terminal is against the national interest of the United States and stands to raise both emissions and energy costs. (1/2) https://t.co/0l3412CQ1y
Today's decision by @FERC to approve the CP2 LNG facility — the most dangerous and controversial LNG export project ever proposed in the U.S — is reckless and the wrong call. @POTUS and @SecGranholm must stand up for our environment and #StopCP2. https://t.co/7RPz5ZXXdx

Disastrous decision from FERC approving the CP2 gas export project. CP2 is a climate catastrophe. It would produce more emissions than 46 coal-fired power plants and spew air pollution into marginalized communities. @POTUS and @ENERGY must reject CP2. https://t.co/PCrnTvA0MW

I joined local community members and environmental advocates to call on @FERC to vote NO on the harmful CP2 LNG project in Louisiana. We're fighting to advance environmental justice and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. https://t.co/1r9VJiKLzA
UPDATE: @FERC is voting on approval for the climate-killing CP2 LNG export terminal TOMORROW. I urge FERC to reject this dirty energy project that will fuel climate chaos, threaten our health, and raise costs for American households. We need to invest in our clean energy future! https://t.co/ydINm5F6Mm
