The European Union is reportedly preparing to reject the renewal of the gas transit deal between Ukraine and Russia, which is set to expire at the end of the year, according to Bloomberg. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico initially stated that Ukraine was open to continuing the transit of Russian gas after 2024, following a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmygal. However, the Ukrainian government later indicated that they do not intend to extend the contract for the transportation of Russian gas to Europe. The current transit deal is due for expiration at the end of this year, and Bratislava is in negotiations to extend it. In response to the possibility of non-renewal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry stated that Russia will use alternative routes and supplies of sea-borne liquefied natural gas. The EU's stance comes despite some member countries, such as Austria and Slovakia, being heavily reliant on Russian gas. The Slovak transmission system operator Eustream suggested that European gas buyers may agree to take over Russian gas at the Russia-Ukraine border if the transit contract is not renewed.
