Ethiopia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, a self-declared sovereign state that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia, to gain access to a 20km zone of the Red Sea. This 'historic' agreement will allow Ethiopia to use Somaliland's Red Sea port of Berbera and provide the Ethiopian navy with access to the Gulf of Aden. In exchange, Ethiopia will recognize Somaliland's sovereignty, making it the first country to do so, and will be allowed to lease territory and port facilities. The deal also includes provisions for expanding military infrastructure. Somalia has strongly rejected the deal, recalling its envoy to Ethiopia and describing Ethiopia’s move as 'naked aggression' that violates Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ethiopia's move is seen as an 'in-depth assessment' towards deciding on full recognition of Somaliland.
