CVS has recalled generic drugs at higher rates than its peers, including Walgreens and Walmart. A Bloomberg analysis found that CVS's over-the-counter generic drugs have been recalled about two times more than those from Walgreens and three times more than those from Walmart. The recalls are linked to tainted factories, which have been found to use contaminated water, produce overly potent medications, and manufacture drugs on the same machines used for pesticides. CVS has hired at least 15 manufacturers cited for manufacturing problems, more than twice as many as Walgreens. FDA spokesperson Amanda Hils discussed a loophole in FDA oversight that allows pharmacy chains like CVS to be considered 'private-label distributors,' contributing to the issue. Dozens of recalls and quality issues raise concerns about the safety of store-brand drugs, which are often assumed to be equivalent to name-brand medications.
