President Donald Trump's administration has initiated mass layoffs across multiple federal agencies, ordering the dismissal of nearly all probationary federal employees who have not yet gained civil service protection. The move aims to dramatically reduce the size of the federal workforce and could affect thousands, potentially up to 200,000 employees hired within the last two years. Elon Musk, heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is working alongside President Trump in this effort to shrink government agencies. Agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—where 5,200 employees are set to be fired—the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are among those affected. The administration has also warned of larger cuts to come, intensifying efforts to purge the federal bureaucracy. Previously, 75,000 workers had accepted buyouts. The layoffs began on Thursday.
