A recent USC report reveals that of the 116 directors attached to the top-grossing domestic films in 2023, only 14 were women, with just 4 being women of color. This comes after major studios pledged to reexamine their employment practices, following George Floyd's murder. However, the study found that the studios failed to produce many films from people of color. The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative criticized the major studios for not taking 'real steps towards fostering change.' The report also highlighted that white women have benefited the most in the mainstream, followed by Asian women, while only one Black woman and one Latina had a major release this year. The biggest film of the year is about indigenous folks, yet none of them directed a mainstream film.
