Metropolitan Police officers arrested several demonstrators in Parliament Square on Saturday after they gathered to show support for Palestine Action, only hours after the organisation was formally outlawed under UK terrorism legislation.

Palestine Action lost a late-night Court of Appeal bid on Friday to halt its proscription, clearing the way for the ban to take effect at midnight. The Home Office designation makes membership of, or public support for, the group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

The protest, which began shortly after 1 p.m., involved dozens of people holding placards and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. Police moved in within minutes, detaining participants under the new law. The force said further updates on arrests will follow.
