Texas Mother Detained After 9-Year-Old Dies in Hot Car at USG Plant

A 9-year-old girl died on Tuesday after being left for roughly eight hours in a Toyota Camry parked outside a United States Gypsum plant in Galena Park, just east of Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies were called at about 2:06 p.m.; the child was taken to Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters the girl’s 36-year-old mother, an employee at the plant, left her daughter in the car when her shift began around 6 a.m., providing a bottle of water and cracking the windows. The mother was detained for questioning while investigators review surveillance footage and await autopsy results before determining whether charges will be filed.

The National Weather Service recorded afternoon highs near 93°F, a level at which a vehicle’s interior can quickly exceed lethal temperatures for children. The incident is the third hot-car fatality reported in Texas within four days and at least the 13th nationwide this year, according to the advocacy group Kids and Car Safety. USG said it is cooperating with law-enforcement officials and that employee and community safety remains its priority.
