New York Drops Charges as Ovidio Guzmán Readies Chicago Guilty Plea

U.S. federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have withdrawn their narcotrafficking case against Ovidio Guzmán López after the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán signaled he will plead guilty in a parallel proceeding in Chicago. A court filing dated 30 June shows Guzmán consenting to transfer the New York matter to the Northern District of Illinois, where he is already jailed.

Under the filing, Guzmán waives his right to trial in New York and will enter a guilty plea before a Chicago federal judge on 9 July. He had previously pleaded not guilty to five counts there, including drug-trafficking, money-laundering and firearms offenses linked to the Sinaloa cartel’s fentanyl operations.

The consolidation streamlines prosecution against the 34-year-old, who was extradited from Mexico in September 2023. New York prosecutors had lodged six additional charges, bringing the total U.S. indictments to at least 11 counts before their dismissal. Terms of the emerging plea deal have not been disclosed, but similar agreements typically allow defendants to seek reduced sentences in exchange for cooperation with investigators.
