Musk Posts Negative Urine and Hair Drug Tests, Challenges New York Times

Elon Musk on Tuesday published a laboratory toxicology report showing a urine sample taken on 11 June tested negative for more than 20 illegal or controlled substances, including ketamine, cocaine and amphetamines. The document, issued by Fastest Labs of South Austin, was posted on his social-media platform X with a terse “lol.”

A day later the Tesla and SpaceX chief released a second report, this time from a hair sample collected the same day. Hair analysis can reveal longer-term drug use, and the result also came back negative. Musk said the additional test was intended to address criticism that urine screens cover only recent consumption.

The disclosures are a direct response to a May investigation by the New York Times that cited unnamed sources in alleging Musk used ketamine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms "far more intensely than previously known" while helping Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and while serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Wall Street Journal had reported similar concerns in early 2024.

Musk denied the accusations, noting he last took prescription ketamine "years ago," and challenged journalists at the Times and the Journal to undergo and publish their own drug tests. The Times said in a statement that Musk is "continuing to lash out because he doesn’t like our reporting" and that nothing he has presented contradicts its findings. The Journal has not responded publicly.
