Mexico's official murder stats for 2023 show a 4.1 percent drop from the previous year, totaling 29,675, the lowest since 2017. Despite the high murder rate, any reduction is considered positive. In El Salvador, there has been a significant drop in homicides, with President Nayib Bukele implementing a crime crackdown and mass incarceration, leading to a 92% decrease in homicides. However, concerns have been raised about the imprisonment of women for abortion-related charges in El Salvador, with calls for their immediate release and the decriminalization of abortion.
Many women are still imprisoned for having an abortion or pregnancy complication. Authorities in El Salvador must immediately release all those unjustly imprisoned and decriminalize abortion without delay. https://t.co/4ckUb4oIy6
Democrats are downgrading felonies, eliminating bail requirements, and promoting reduced sentences and early release, even for violent, repeat offenders. Meanwhile, El Salvador is doing the opposite. https://t.co/IFFmtTfedp https://t.co/FKQUfXfL6C
NEW POLL: President Bukele of El Salvador leads his nearest opponent by 86%. This result follows a whopping 92% drop in homicides in El Salvador following a crime crackdown and mass incarceration. As it turns out, jailing criminals is a good idea. The election is next month. https://t.co/LuS8aQKaxN

Two things people don't acknowledge much about El Salvador's crime drop is that one it began before Bukele took office and that two Bukele also negotiated with some of the gangs. It wasn't just about his mass imprisonment of folks.
The last woman imprisoned in El Salvador on charges linked to abortion called for people in the Central American country to stop denouncing women who suffer obstetric emergencies, in her first public comments since her release https://t.co/Q61Wc8lNkM
Mexico's murders are way too high. I have covered the violence here for 23 years and reported in every state in Mexico and have tracked the rise of cartels in many aspects. I don't support any political party here. But I believe any reduction in murders is a good thing. Do you? https://t.co/B37R9Kpvn8
Mexico just published the official murder stats for 2023 - the last full year of AMLO. It came as 29,675, which is a 4.1 percent drop from last year, and lowest since 2017. The murder rate is still very high but any drop is good news. (They'll be arguing about fixed stats.) https://t.co/Gcj9BBJm5m
