Josie Huang, a reporter for NPR member station LAist 89.3, has reached a $700,000 settlement agreement with Los Angeles County and the LA County Sheriff’s Department after being arrested while covering a protest in 2020. The settlement comes after she was taken into custody while covering a demonstration the night two sheriff’s deputies were shot three years ago. The incident involved a bogus ‘wiretapping’ charge and the seizure of the journalist's phone and laptop by an Ohio sheriff's office. Despite the charges being dismissed, the journalist has not received his belongings back.
