The Los Angeles Times, which is reportedly losing $40 million annually, has laid off 115 employees, hitting the De Los and Washington, D.C. teams especially hard. The layoffs have led to a significant loss of diversity in the newsroom, with particular impact on journalists covering marginalized communities and the city's Latino population. This development has raised concerns about the future of journalism, the impact on election coverage, and the loss of public trust in the LA Times. The LA Times Guild has released a statement addressing the layoffs, and there is an ongoing conversation about the financial sustainability of traditional media outlets and the potential rise of citizen journalism.
EVERY UNEMPLOYED LA TIMES REPORTER: https://t.co/YYqqeO82aS
Zach was truly one of BI’s best. He gave me a chance to do healthcare policy stories when I started out as a BI fellow, and always har a sharp sense for framing and top-notch editing skills. Any newsroom would be lucky to have Zach leading their healthcare team! https://t.co/clAmRigsh5
See announcements of media and newsroom lay offs. My heart goes out to all those affected. Hopefully you will land work quickly Never seen a profession so self intent on it's own destruction who simultaneously disdains their own customers as journalism. Probably a lesson there
I, for one, don't believe that the LA Times communis... I mean "journalists" advocated for white genocide. They are... wait... WERE... propagandists. And their layoffs were, in fact, good. https://t.co/BZqJ1wLWQp
Business Insider cuts add to new round of news media industry lay-offs https://t.co/tt3sZnAC28 via @ft
If any of those people laid off by the LA Times are interested in another job in media, some openings should be coming soon... https://t.co/0TukVGb6qj
I've wanted to be a journalist ever since I was a kid and I can't imagine doing anything else. But times like this make it hard. I'm sad to see so many talented people/friends lose their jobs, and today our own newsroom has been hit hard. Not sure what else to say.
Just an unbelievably bleak moment in media. Sending solidarity to everyone in this messed up industry laid off or worrying for their jobs. They tell you getting into this biz that it won’t be easy or highly paid. But we do it because we know it’s important (and we’re stubborn).
A horrible start of the year for the fourth estate. Heartbroken because the work journalists do is so essential and so important. https://t.co/dr8ES1EPM4
Zach is an outstanding editor with enormous range, helping reporters churn out scoops, investigations, features, and other industry leading coverage. He’s also just delightful to work with. What a loss for BI and a huge win for anyone who lands him. https://t.co/UUBdYrDYPS
if you’re looking for a thoughtful, sharp, top-notch editor, hire @ZTracer. happy to provide more details; he’s one of the best editors I’ve ever had. https://t.co/8y9HpUS6gk
I've worked with Zach for more than a decade at two different publications, and you could not do better. He is a tireless advocate for the reporting, a steady hand on sensitive stories, and an all around good human being. https://t.co/izQJDpV2Di
I can't even begin to picture what my time at BI would have looked like without Zach. He's an insanely talented editor (as evidence by the work he was setting out to do with the investigations team), and he helped me grow as a reporter + editor so much. https://t.co/2auwfYDLmk
A crushing round of layoffs at Business Insider today, including my warm, talented deputy, Zach Tracer. If you're hiring, please reach out and I can tell you how lucky you'd be to have him. https://t.co/UYsrJTQ62f
personal news: i was laid off today from business insider ): i'm fine but will miss working with amazing colleagues and am looking forward to seeing what's next (if you have an idea of what i should do next — dm me or send me an email!)
Three years ago, Zach hired me to join Business Insider. We worked together through the craziness that was covering Covid-19. I learned so much from his teamwork, storytelling skills, smarts ... He's an unbelievably supportive editor that every newsroom would be lucky to have https://t.co/o7AWULdtlD
Today's my last day at Business Insider. I've had an incredible time leading BI's healthcare coverage over the past 5 years, and was excited to start with the investigations team this month. I'll be rooting for both groups of incredibly talented reporters from afar.
Leah is a supremely talented editor that I’ve had the privilege of working with for a year. Any newsroom would be lucky to have her. https://t.co/p2UzSlxGw4
media layoffs in 2024 LA Times (20% of staff) TIME (15% of staff) Pitchfork (all of it, pretty much) Sports Illustrated (all of it) National Geographic Business Insider (8%) NBC News it's still January
Pour one out for the laid-off @latimes journos https://t.co/ETWZhgl4qH
I’m having a very hard time feeling sympathy for the LA Times staffers who were fired. https://t.co/uLw6slNGjY
I've had the pleasure of working with Tanya at two different newsrooms, and I've always been in awe of her innate sense of the zeitgeist, what's a story, what will resonate with people. Those are truly rare skills - hire her https://t.co/Bs90I0x4Wx
This is a big loss for BI. I'm constantly impressed with Kieran's work. Editors with job openings, go hire him. https://t.co/7BlkqvGZf4

welp, after 2.5 years, i was laid off from Business Insider. it was awesome working with so many great journalists. really sad to be leaving. i love writing for an array of beats - tech, digi culture, music - please hit me with opps for stories/bios/editing: [email protected]
Enjoying seeing the MSM hate rag publications laying off employees today (Business Insider, Vice, Buzzfeed, etc.) https://t.co/gKu1CStJgT
A mutual support network for laid-off Los Angeles journalists is in the works, gathering funds to redistribute to L.A. journalists affected by recent layoffs. Here’s how you can help. https://t.co/5AK4lbptNY
Tanya is an incredibly talented journalist with a sharp understanding of the digital culture, internet/tech, and creator beat. Any outlet would be lucky to have her https://t.co/IvtXjrMTHY
tanya is brilliant — before she was at BI, she was one of my favorite internet culture reporters at BuzzFeed News. I was so thrilled to see her come to BI, and am now so sad to see her leave. someone hire her stat!!!!!!!!! https://t.co/Ey0SvCUEkm
We should all applaud LA Times for having diverse and inclusive layoffs https://t.co/TwQYuWmvwg
Journalism layoffs since last week: Sports Illustrated, Pitchfork, LA Times, National Geographic, TIME, now Business Insider https://t.co/hzr4IZsVaR
LA Times journos acting like they experienced a Thanos snap. https://t.co/vF3EerHSO0
In case you’re having a bad day, here’s the LATimes newsroom this morning after they had massive layoffs Turns out even Californians don’t want to read their garbage propaganda https://t.co/BsgILTu9WP
Early in my VC career 20+ years ago, I read a great tech article and sent a positive note to the journalist. That email started a relationship with @BradStone, an emerging tech journalist. Today Brad became the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek - huge congratulations to him! @BW https://t.co/Kbegs1GgBE
Tremendous news ... Congrats, @BradStone!! And, kudos, @joelwebershow. You did a wonderful job these past few years!! https://t.co/U8pRkIg22u
You know these cuts aren't about quality of work when someone like Brady is getting laid off. Aching for him and so many others On the plus side for a countless number of outlets: one of the most talented writers and reporters I know is available https://t.co/1Ej8qNpLTT

Due to financial problems, left-wing paper @latimes announced it will lay off around 20% of staff. CRT columnist @jeanguerre took to X to complain that her race didn't protect her. The development follows mass layoffs at Sports Illustrated. Read: https://t.co/uTTiDLFpv5
Bloomberg Businessweek's next editor will be Brad Stone, the company said on Wednesday. Stone, a veteran technology journalist, was most recently the senior executive editor of Bloomberg News's global technology team, which he has led since 2015. https://t.co/ibP5uVmd8c
What the mass L.A. Times layoffs just told us about the future of journalism https://t.co/HKLWbvzslH
No words can express the horrific decision to layoff 115 of my latimes colleagues. @francineorr represents the very heart of the LATimes and has risked her life many times for the public good. @latguild is fighting to preserve some of these jobs. #sad isn’t enough.
Congratulations @BradStone! Incredible things ahead for BW. https://t.co/Nd5yIqZDVn
Huge congrats to my friend and colleague @bradstone who is now the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek! So proud of how he’s led our incredible tech team and excited for his next chapter. 🙌🙌🙌🙌 https://t.co/plgWyGOdFg

We're thrilled to share @BradStone has been named the new editor of Bloomberg Businessweek! https://t.co/guLrP9u9eC
Amid the troubling layoffs at the LA Times, I spoke with @SophiaBollag @SFChronicle about my efforts at the federal level to fairly compensate newspapers & hardworking journalists for the invaluable resources they offer to our communities & our democracy. https://t.co/3jH2Ur6dZx
Personal news: I'm taking over as editor of Bloomberg Businessweek. I've loved writing for @BW over the last decade and am excited to lead it into a new age. Huge thanks to @Joelwebershow for an exceptional run at the helm, and to my @technology colleagues. I'm not going far.
Mini is a great writer and reporter, a great colleague, and my friend. She’d be an asset to any newsroom and if you are hiring, or know someone who is, she should be at the top of your list. https://t.co/kIO4rVrkdw
Yesterday I learned I'm being laid off from TIME. I'm sad to leave and eager to find a new role, ideally continuing to write features and cover politics. I love finding unique, creative angles and crafting absorbing copy. Find my work/reach me: https://t.co/WjKZGcVYeB
This is the statement from the LA Times' DEI caucuses complaining about the recent layoffs. Notice that they only defend their work on the basis of race, not on quality, merit, or the bottom line. DEI is purely ideological, subordinating journalism to racial box-checking. https://t.co/6HVxaebecx
The mass layoffs at the @latimes are only a “blow for journalism” if these are journalists. But since they’re not, layoffs & bankruptcy for these institutions is a big win for journalism. It’s like getting rid of hospitals & doctors engaged in malpractice—a big win for medicine!
To everyone who feels sorry for the so called “journalists” who were fired at LA Times, this is the garbage they put out: https://t.co/V2xtwRzmQr
It just hit me today that LAT laid off every single Black person in its Washington Bureau
It's been devastating watching the volume of talent laid off @latimes over the last few days. I wish I could do more for my colleagues in the profession, but if you are an investigative or data reporter and want to teach brilliant students, I am hiring. https://t.co/9NsCivmaOy
As journalists across the nation continue to complain about layoffs or their reporting being called “fake news.” They just don’t get it. They will never get it. https://t.co/GRZcUm9h3B
TIME Magazine lays off 15% of unionized editorial staff, becoming latest news outlet to slash workforce https://t.co/uBLgXOhtL2
Looking at the steep decline in quality and profitability at WaPo and LA Times: there's a price to pay for being a billionaire's plaything...
the @latimes needs to die https://t.co/6nwPsAdtjy
Sad to see many talented people let go by my former employer. If you're looking to hire some great magazine journalists, let me know and I'll hook you up. https://t.co/pqtJYIRQ8d
It is never OK to celebrate when someone loses their job Being a journalist for the LA Times is not a job. It's a soulless effort to destroy America from sunrise to sunset. It's a propagandists role that would make Goebbels proud Fuck these people Feel free to celebrate

Fuck the LA Times and their racist ass “journalists”. https://t.co/mlB8KGPhtz
The LA Times keeps sinking to new lows. https://t.co/1vJ5B51EAW
Journalists of color hit hard in seismic L.A. Times layoffs. A vertical the Times launched in 2023 to cover the city’s 49% Latino population, was gutted. Jeong Park, who was hired to cover Asian American communities in 2022, was also laid off. https://t.co/wvZgcqOc5b
Journalists simply insist they are not only necessary but courageous and selfless. Their work justifies itself. Yet they can't grasp they don't produce anything of value and as their industry crumbles, they demand society should be ashamed for not valuing them more.
Had a few people reach out, so figured I should note that I still have my job at the LA Times. But it’s been a very tough day. And a devastating blow to our sports section. So many great journalists gone.
In @latimes layoffs, “The Latino Caucus will lose 38% of its members. The Black Caucus will lose 33% members. The AAPI [Asian American Pacific Islander] + MENASA [Middle East, North Africa, South Asia] caucuses will lose 34% of their combined membership.” https://t.co/h3GOvIJNRm
Can’t believe it’s come to this. Brady is one of the best writers I know and a great collaborator. Not to mention a great friend. Terrible to lose him and so many other @latimessports colleagues https://t.co/qNj2UskTPO
Pretty awful reading through all the tweets by super-talented LA Times staffers who were part of today's layoffs. It's impossible to quantify how much institutional knowledge will be lost. Hope everyone lands on their feet soon. https://t.co/kIlmyF4jF5
went to sleep as the la times layoffs started rolling in and woke up to an absolute bloodbath of journalism. to say i am disgusted is an absolute understatement. hurting for all my irl friends, industry peers, and people whose work i deeply admired.
Every time layoffs gut another beacon of local news, I’m devastated. But I’m also reminded: Billionaires won’t save journalism. Journalists will.
The LA Times lost its objectivity, turned hard left politically, and demonized views right of center in their news stories and op/ed's. Now, they just laid off 115 people. This is the future for much of legacy media. You've become the Enquirer. https://t.co/RIp66R98LV
Fuck you and your racist rag of a paper, loser. https://t.co/5CPTTjLsST
Apologies to @TheRadioFreeCA listeners who will hear @DavidBahnsen and me discuss the pre-mass-firing realities, including the fact that progressives are killing their own paper. Mass layoffs hit LA Times, California's biggest newspaper https://t.co/S2WyUmamuF
Why are these laid off LA Times journalists complaining? Didn’t they hear the Biden economy is booming?
“the newsroom’s sole reporting positions dedicated to covering Southern California’s diverse Black and Asian communities will be eliminated” um someone tell the LAT those roles were a huge reason why some of us subscribe and they produced some of the best of storytelling of LA? https://t.co/9vXZzA9FaM
News of the LA times laying off roughly 100 journalists during this election year cripples our democracy. As a reputable source, I am dismayed to learn of layoffs. Accurate reporting is the only way to growth faith in our institutions. https://t.co/ASqQgDIoiz

Statement from Black, Latino, AAPI and MENASA caucus folks @latguild. The proposed layoffs will decimate the ranks of young journalists of color at the LA Times. They cannot be allowed to go through. https://t.co/NxZG4Yb7jQ https://t.co/YFZSW59Z0G
It really is a gut punch to hear what has happened at the LA Times to so many hard-working journalists. It's hard to stomach what has happened to the industry. All I can say to those affected is stay strong. I have been there and understand. You will get through this.
Thinking today of the amazing journalists at the @latguild. The treatment they've received is so unfair and so bad for people in Los Angeles. Interning with them was what made me really decide to be a journalist. It's a devastating day for local journalism. https://t.co/FuPRci8gs4
Hire Jen if you can; she's one of the absolute best at this game and a great person as well. https://t.co/CNrf2pOnpe
My “for you” tab is just full of wonderful journalists announcing they’ve been laid off from the LA Times. Fuck this industry.
This is a link to a non-profit that offers financial aid to journalists in Southern California. https://t.co/9oLKAIinOr. Consider applying or donating. This is a very dark day for journalism. Thanks to @LarryMantle for making me aware of it!
Gutted by all of the LA Times layoffs today but Jen is one of my best friends so this one hits hardest. The work she did there covering weird, wonderful, important entertainment stories was truly unmatched and I wish I could hire her right now. https://t.co/HRTpGfCbXR
The awful news of layoffs in media continues. If you’re interested in joining a great team at @BaltimoreBanner, we have some openings. And hell if you want to work here and do something you don’t see listed, I’d encourage you to make that pitch too! https://t.co/bHQ2NWvA6x
L.A. TIMES REPORTING ABOUT L.A. TIMES LAYOFFS, AND THEN BLAMING IT ON COVID JUST SHOWS YOU HOW STUPID THIS CITY HAS BECOME. THE POLITICS AND ECONOMICS IS SHIT HERE, DON'T EVEN NEED TO EXPRESS WHAT IT IS.....BUT IT'S EVIDENT TO THOSE WHO CAN THINK WITHOUT IDENTITY POLITICS.
Jen is the best goddamn writer out there. If anyone is looking to hire the best goddamn writer out there, call Jen, she's the best goddamn writer out there. https://t.co/kjvGqUAuxe
The journalists of @latguild and their readers deserve better. We stand with the workers in the face of this destructive decision. https://t.co/2Dnu8d68f3
I work with words but I have none to capture what this day is like. I will miss so many fine journalists, so many fine people. A heartbreaking day. https://t.co/D9mmNBkCia
LA Times and CNN are experiencing massive layoffs. Now Hollywood will be able to hire a bunch of new fiction writers to get our favorite shows back on the air!! Rejoice! 😉
The LA Times had over 100 layoffs, and I’d just like to ask each of you to think about those people today and pray that they learn to code. https://t.co/YJ88sMjmMZ
Oh damn! Been a fan of Jen and her work for nearly 20 years! One of THE best in the business! Someone hire her. https://t.co/9UgZbhXFF0
hire jen. had the pleasure of editing her for a few years and she’s incredible https://t.co/fMI5h7jTFH
"The @latimes has long been known for such advocacy journalism. As readership & revenue declined, it has gone through various owners and restructurings. However, it is still effectively writing off half of the population with its advocacy reporting. That is why it is so telling… https://t.co/wfrQ4xcc0L
You’d think I’d be better equipped to find the words to express how devastated I am about all of my fellow journalists being laid off as well as the others who are taking pay cuts as they strike today. This industry has the potential to be so much better. I’m speechless.
The mass layoffs today at the LA Times got me, too. (While up at 6am at Sundance to cover Oscar nominations!) Grateful I’ve gotten to write + podcast about stories close to my heart and for the countless amazing colleagues I’ve worked with & learned from. Stay strong out there 💜
Blake is a tremendous journalist and writer and a terrific person who has overcome many challenges to pursue what he loves doing. Would be a tremendous asset for any media entity or news gathering resource https://t.co/ZSJ4tBgKdR
The billionaire owner of the LA Times laid off at least 115 people at the start of an election year & on the day of #NHprimary & Oscar nominations which is a major LA story. Also, the first LA Times Oscar nomination for The Last Repair Shop https://t.co/TgVvY1JQdl #oscars
Feeling for all my former colleagues today. I've never been this discouraged about the future of journalism. Here's hoping you all land safely.
we might get a ton of unemployed journalists AND the end of the los angeles times! they're eating one another and dont know what to do https://t.co/cxHOo3URVw https://t.co/6r263z27vL
particularly evil that the la times laid off so many journalists who covered the city's marginalized & historically overlooked communities !!
Irony alert. The LA Times story today reporting on the layoffs at the LA Times is blaming the "economic headwinds" caused by covid. The @latimes cheer-led the lockdowns, panic mongered covid, and vilified lockdown opponents. https://t.co/xGeLT0hjr3
More news layoffs, this time at the L.A. Times. Reduced oversight of public money & projects means there's less chance of uncovering corruption. Which means your costs - and taxes - will likely rise. Less local news is bad for the economy and democracy.…
Now I hope she gets fired. I’m sorry but the LA Times is a fucked up rag. https://t.co/v9Lwkxhrok
i am gutted by how many talented people in journalism have lost their jobs today, yesterday, last week, etc. the system is so broken and not every journalist will be able to make a living off of newsletters. there needs to be a larger solution
Christmas has come early with some of these LA Times layoffs. “It’s a dark day. I was the only Latina columnist… Trump is looming & I’m author of Hatemonger.” Do you think they reflect on how this sanctimony may affect readership? https://t.co/UfZArAvYHy
It is devastating to see the gutting of the LA Times like that, alongside all the other layoffs — it's a terrifying reminder that the industry is as perilous as ever.
Statement from the @latguild on today's mass layoffs at the @latimes: https://t.co/uRPWcMJqpf
The LA Times lays off 115 people, with the De Los and Washington, D.C. teams especially hard-hit https://t.co/37HdnclFsQ via @NiemanLab
ridiculous what’s happening at the la times. they always start slashing the talented journalists actually keeping the place humming along and not the overpaid execs doing fuckall
Devastating indeed. Alejandra is one of several colleagues and friends at the Times being laid off. They are talented people who will find a place where they will continue on their excellent path. I applaud them and wish them the best. https://t.co/wnhv1mLNas
not one single person bemoaning the LA Times layoffs has a shred of introspection over why they failed so dramatically & why nobody trusts or likes them their only reaction is aimless whining/screeching citizen journalism is the future no matter how much you whine https://t.co/hv7SG5Ah0q https://t.co/jLhqupexDr
Hearing that pretty much everyone at the Los Angeles Times has now been fired except for the straight white men https://t.co/WWOTPicfvf
Letters to the Editor: Amid L.A. Times layoffs, readers wonder what can be done to save journalism (via @latimesopinion) https://t.co/bCHDGUaNwk https://t.co/CeQJw6sF8T
I think the scariest thing about the latest media layoffs including at news organizations like LA Times is that an election is coming up. This provides an opportunity for new outlets to shine, but also presents a concerning gap for credible sources/journalists to cover.
Heartbroken for the @latimes newsroom, the latest to be gutted in recent weeks. Society is suffering greatly from media’s decline and it’s only going to get worse for our democracy and culture.
Letters to the Editor: Amid L.A. Times layoffs, readers wonder what can be done to save journalism (via @latimesopinion ) https://t.co/bCHDGUaNwk
Making a career in this industry always feels like a longshot, but a day like today with this LA Times news makes it feel fully impossible. The amount of talent getting laid off today is unthinkable for a major paper trying to do serious work. Brutal, brutal, brutal...
la times is lately a force for division and promotion of failed policies that diminish our quality of life. it's been a while since they lost the public trust. terrible day for @latimes employees, a HOPEFUL day for the people of the California. https://t.co/BeZ0yvHMsQ
I don’t know a lot of people at the LA Times, but I’ve followed the work of @Sammy_Roth for years now and have admired a lot of the paper’s recent output. A very sad day for the second-biggest city in the US and for journalism in general.
The L.A. Times is losing $40 million a year and the rocket scientists who work there thought it was a good time to walk off the job and demand hire wages 😂
