Indianapolis Downtown Shooting Kills Two, Injures Five After July 4

Two people, including a juvenile, were fatally shot and at least five others were wounded when gunfire erupted shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, police said. The shooting occurred near Illinois and Washington streets, a block from the city’s Artsgarden, as crowds were dispersing following Independence Day celebrations.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responding to an earlier disturbance heard the shots and found seven victims in all. Deputy Chief Tanya Terry said three of the victims were minors. One person died at the scene and the juvenile died later at a hospital. The surviving victims were taken to local hospitals in stable to serious condition.

Investigators recovered several firearms and detained about seven individuals for questioning, though no charges had been announced as of Saturday afternoon. Chief Chris Bailey called the violence “unacceptable,” noting officers were stretched thin by “hundreds of unsupervised kids” roaming downtown and that roughly 20 arrests were made during a night of scattered fights and shootings across the city. The investigation remains active, with police asking witnesses to come forward.
