A five-year-old girl fell overboard from the Disney Dream at about 11:30 a.m. on 29 June as the ship was sailing from the Bahamas to Port Everglades, Florida. The child lost her balance while sitting on a Deck 4 railing and slipped backward through a porthole roughly 20–45 feet above the Atlantic, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl’s 37-year-old father jumped into the ocean immediately after his daughter. Witnesses said the pair spent close to 20 minutes in the water before a yellow rescue tender launched by the crew reached them. Both passengers were brought back on board within minutes, examined by the ship’s medical staff and later transported to a Fort Lauderdale hospital; neither sustained life-threatening injuries.

In a statement issued 2 July, sheriff’s detectives said security footage corroborated the family’s account and confirmed that the father had not placed the child on the railing, countering social-media speculation. Investigators described the episode as accidental and found no indication of foul play, though the inquiry remains open.

Disney Cruise Line praised the crew’s “exceptional skills and prompt actions,” highlighting its man-overboard training protocols. While passenger falls are rare—industry data show 25 such incidents and nine successful rescues in 2019—the company said the swift response underscored the effectiveness of its safety procedures.
