Apple Original Films scored its first theatrical breakthrough as “F1: The Movie,” distributed by Warner Bros., opened at an estimated $55.6 million in the United States and Canada—later upgraded to $57 million after actuals—giving Brad Pitt the second-largest domestic launch of his career.
The racing drama collected $88.4 million across 78 overseas markets, led by the U.K. ($9.2 million), China ($9 million) and Mexico ($6.7 million). Combined with North American receipts, the picture generated $144 million worldwide in its debut frame, rising to $146.3 million once Sunday figures were finalized.
Premium formats proved pivotal: IMAX screens contributed $27.7 million, or 19 percent of global ticket sales, including $12.8 million domestically. The strong start offers an encouraging early return on a production that cost well over $200 million and was directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
“F1” easily out-paced Universal and Blumhouse’s “M3GAN 2.0,” which opened to roughly $10 million domestically, and steered Apple’s fledgling film division back on course after muted performances from “Napoleon” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The result is likely to embolden the company’s $1 billion-a-year investment in cinema releases and has already sparked internal discussions about a sequel.
