South Korea is considering implementing supervision of cryptocurrency mixers, following a similar move by the United States, to curb the use by North Korean hackers who are among the largest users. A UN report indicates that North Korean hackers are sharing money-laundering and underground banking networks with criminals in Southeast Asia. The European Union is also taking significant steps, having reached a provisional deal on Thursday on an anti-money laundering package. The new EU regulations will require crypto firms to conduct due diligence on transactions worth €1,000 or more and improve cooperation between national authorities to combat money laundering, including in the crypto sector. The EU's measures extend to self-custody wallets, customer due diligence for crypto payments, anonymity coins and accounts, and crypto mixers. The European Banking Authority is also extending anti-money laundering and terrorist-financing measures to include crypto firms.
