The State Police established a checkpoint in Santiago Xalitzintla, on the Paso de Cortés highway, to prevent residents from approaching the crater of the Popocatépetl volcano, known as "Don Goyo", for making offerings on its 'birthday'. Despite the restrictions due to recent heightened activity around the volcano, residents of Santiago Xalitzintla found a way to celebrate "Don Goyo's" birthday with offerings around the volcano on their birthday. This annual celebration includes songs, dance, and gifts, honoring one of Mexico's most dangerous volcanoes, which poses a threat to some 25 million people living within 100 kilometers of it.
