Montgomery County has recently changed its stance on immigration enforcement, becoming 'newly cooperative' with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by honoring two deportation 'detainer' requests. This shift in policy has led to the county turning over two illegal immigrants accused of sex abuse crimes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The individuals involved include a Honduran national charged with raping a minor and a 33-year-old Salvadoran convicted of sex abuse of a minor, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison with most of the sentence suspended, and transferred to ICE on March 11. ICE Director Darius Reeves has praised this cooperation, highlighting the importance of working together to ensure safer neighborhoods. The agreement between Montgomery County and ICE was established last month, marking the county's first compliance with detainer requests after a period of resistance.
“We are extremely happy to be working with our law enforcement partners in Montgomery County toward safer neighborhoods,” said Darius Reeves, director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division in Baltimore, which oversees Maryland. https://t.co/giruNJwPjY
