In a significant crackdown across India, authorities have uncovered a widespread network involved in the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit medicines. Raids conducted in Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Hyderabad led to the recovery of fake medicines, with a retail value estimated at Rs 33 lakh, found to be composed of merely chalk and starch. An Assocham study reveals that 25% of all medicines in India are fake, counterfeit, or substandard. The Delhi Police have arrested 10 individuals, including two identified as the kingpins of this interstate drug racket, one of whom is Surender Mallick, operating an illicit medicine factory in Shamli. These arrests span across various levels of the supply chain, from manufacturers to pharmacists. Additionally, a sextortion racket targeting individuals, including a notable case involving a 71-year-old doctor from Delhi who was defrauded of Rs 9 lakh, was also dismantled by the Delhi Police. The operations have led to the seizure of large quantities of illicit medicines and the closure of two factories in Ghaziabad implicated in the production of these counterfeit drugs.
