Today, the HouseGOP is advancing H.R. 7109, a bill that seeks to include a citizenship question in the U.S. Census. This move, primarily supported by Republicans and currently under vote by GOPOversight, has sparked significant opposition from Democrats. Critics, including those from areas like New Mexico where over 50% of people identify as Hispano, argue that the addition of this question could lead to undercounts, particularly in communities with high noncitizen populations, thereby affecting federal funding allocation and congressional representation. The Supreme Court previously blocked a similar attempt during the Trump administration, citing constitutional concerns.
The Census Bureau has a constitutionally mandated responsibility to count the number of persons in the United States. Today, Republicans forced a vote on H.R. 7109, an unconstitutional bill intended to make people afraid and to discourage their participation in the Census. H.R.… https://t.co/uwnz1uZrQX
Republicans put forth a bill tonight to undermine equal representation by adding a discriminatory 'citizenship question' to the Census. Their plan would result in underreporting across immigrant communities & make it more difficult to fairly allocate federal funding. I voted NO!
Adding a citizenship question to the census is an attempt to disempower immigrant communities by undercounting noncitizens and scaring others into not completing the survey. A citizenship question is also unconstitutional. Which is why SCOTUS blocked Trump’s attempt to add one.
NEW: @GOPOversight will vote today on adding the Citizenship question to the U.S. Census. The Democratic Party OPPOSES adding the citizenship question because it would lose seats by removing its representation of illegal aliens. Do you support adding the citizenship question?
Today the @HouseGOP is advancing a bill to curtail who counts in America. H.R. 7109 is not about representation—but about who counts in the Census—like NM where more than 50% of our people identify as Hispano. Undercounts have devastating impacts. Everyone counts in America. https://t.co/4L8tVwQpRM
