A parliamentary inquiry into school violence, sparked by the Bétharram case, has announced its intention to summon French Prime Minister François Bayrou for questioning. The commission, set up to investigate violence in educational settings, will begin its hearings on March 20, 2025, and aims to deliver its report by the end of June. François Bayrou, who previously served as the Minister of Education and president of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques departmental council, is implicated in the scandal due to allegations that he was aware of the violence at Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram school. Despite these allegations, which he denies, Bayrou is expected to be questioned on his role during his tenure in these positions. He is accused of having allocated 1 million francs in public subsidies to the school between 1995 and 1999, despite being informed of the maltreatment of students. Alain Esquerre, the spokesperson for the victims' collective, will be the first to be heard on March 20. The inquiry is also responding to over a hundred complaints filed against the establishment, which has been at the center of a decades-long scandal involving violence and rape.
