In a concerted effort to reform marijuana laws in the United States, a series of political actions have been taken by various government officials and bodies. In December 2023, the Governor of Colorado spearheaded an initiative with several governors urging the Biden administration to "reschedule" cannabis, aiming to dismantle financial and legal obstacles facing the marijuana industry. This follows two executive orders issued in 2020 and 2021 by the same governor to address related issues. Concurrently, President Biden, during a campaign stop, assured a supporter of his commitment to marijuana reform, emphasizing that 'no one should be jailed' for cannabis possession and stating he's "Taking Care" of marijuana reform. Additionally, 36 US House Democrats have called on President Biden to grant "Cannabis Clemency" for thousands of individuals, while Senators including Sen. Fetterman and Sen. Warren have jointly written a letter to advocate for the legalization of weed. Rep. Barbara Lee and Rep. Blumenauer, co-chairs of the #CannabisCaucus, also led a letter to the President, requesting clemency for those incarcerated for nonviolent marijuana offenses, reflecting a broad consensus for change among the American populace.
