The contiguous United States has just experienced its warmest winter on record since 1895-96, according to Prism climate data and AccuWeather. This winter was a full 0.75F warmer than the second-place winter of 2015-16, topping it by more than double that margin. Chicago marked its warmest winter in 92 years, with February 2024 being the warmest February in 153 years of record-keeping. The warm winter, attributed to climate change and a strong El Niño, also saw areas like Fargo experiencing mean temperatures of +14F for the winter. In addition to the high temperatures, despite a dry February in the East, the winter season saw significant precipitation, with many areas from near D.C. to near Boston recording their wettest winter season on record.
