The 2023 hurricane season, tied with 1933 as the fourth most active on record, continues with Tropical Storm Tammy and Category 4 Hurricane Norma. Tammy, contributing to the tally of 20 named storms this year, is expected to bring heavy rains to the Lesser Antilles and Leeward Islands, with a Tropical Storm Watch in place. Meanwhile, Norma threatens to bring flooding rains to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico's Baja California.
TS #Tammy looks a little more organized this morning, but it appears shear is still undercutting the outflow layer, which will slow intensification some. If we see convection wrap all the way around the system, we could see faster intensification. https://t.co/7bpOHyXoaE
A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect today. https://t.co/RhVIw3QuEr
5 am AST Fri Oct. 20 Key Messages for Tropical Storm #Tammy. https://t.co/lDouBn701U https://t.co/DvjPgIoaRq
#Norma is on an opposite trend that it was yesterday. Weakening rather than RI. Expect a miserable Saturday in the southern Baja and Cabo as that trend continues. Norma is also not a very fast moving system which should allow its needed moisture to get into parched TX Mon/Tue… https://t.co/IOL9NrBJYP https://t.co/6im8h4M9E0
5pm AST Thu 19th Oct Key Messages for Tropical Storm #Tammy: Hurricane Watches & Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for parts of Lesser Antilles & Leeward Islands w/ heavy rains starting tomorrow. https://t.co/0kMcHDsvB6 https://t.co/OlukXeXUCY
Interesting hook pattern to the overshooting tops (strong thunderstorms) in #Tammy this afternoon - seems to be associated with the mid-level center, which is tilted SE of the LLC based on recon. Getting ready to head out for our #NOAA42 flight to see what it's doing! https://t.co/uIZQsriL4R
Late US tropical cyclone threat in 10-15 may come out of the western Caribbean ( where end game usually is) as the ridge develops over troubled waters https://t.co/fa7gEyF9Ox
Hurricane hunters continuing to show Tropical Storm Tammy remains a very lopsided storm with the worst weather & highest winds displaced over the northeast half. With southwest wind shear expected to continue, Tammy will likely maintain this asymmetric appearance, meaning those… https://t.co/Ha7kM9K37c https://t.co/S93FK6OpMn
Tammy will strengthen over the leeward islands this weekend - I’m watching carefully as my mom currently in med school in Anguilla… #atlantic #hurricane https://t.co/Bdyq9Ihb6T
Tropical trouble in both Pacific & Atlantic: Norma is a Cat 4 & could bringing flooding rains to Cabo San Lucas & surrounding region into weekend. Tammy forecast to become hurricane & bring flooding to Lesser Antilles & Virgin Islands. Details: https://t.co/ilkpIPYvyl https://t.co/URco5iiTph
Here's a composite of the tail Doppler radar analyses from this morning's @NOAA_HurrHunter mission into TS #Tammy. The vortex is tilted to the east with height, but there were some signs of tilt reducing with time. If the vortex aligns, we may see additional intensification. https://t.co/v89sLMY7RB
Zooming into the ragged eye of Category 4 Hurricane #Norma churning slowly north via #GOESWest IR imagery. While #HurricaneNorma is expected to weaken before landfall, the NHC has issued a Hurricane Watch for the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California. https://t.co/C7RJ6z0cO4 https://t.co/XwiMZCkmLh
🚨 Hurricane #Norma has reached Category 4 strength. Norma will likely begin to turn toward the northeast this weekend, eventually reaching landfall early next week along the central west coast of Mexico. https://t.co/n7elOxGXD5
Hurricane #Norma in the ENP is a powerful category 4 storm as of today's 9am MDT NHC advisory after undergoing rapid intensification. Hurricane Hunters will investigate Norma later today. The hurricane may be near peak intensity because shear + dry air are expected to increase. https://t.co/vBNMkrxwq0
The National Hurricane Center is warning of a major hurricane moving toward Mexico's Los Cabos resort area. https://t.co/1h9uP4vmXf
Although sheared with its LLC near the edge of convection, #Tammy has actually been able to strengthen a little bit, dropping the pressure 2mb between passes. The persistent central convection is definitely helping. We'll see if shear gets the better of it later https://t.co/hTeTfgpUIz
Going to be a very close call whether #Tammy goes directly over or just east of some of the Lesser Antilles and Virgin Islands as it turns to the north. Right now, both HAFS versions show a direct hit, while HWRF (which is stronger) keeps it further east. Small wind field in all. https://t.co/KaHcgS3oVv
Hurricane #Norma intensified into a major Category 3 storm overnight with cold cloud tops wrapped around an emerging eye as seen in IR imagery. Additional strengthening is likely before wind shear and dry air weakens #HurricaneNorma en route to Mexico's Baja California peninsula. https://t.co/zkxZkRElQr

We now have Tropical Storm Tammy out over the open Atlantic. Tammy is moving to the west at 17mph, but a more northerly turn should take place by later this week. Eventually it will turn toward the northeast making that u-turn out over the ocean. https://t.co/F2STbq7M1X
Hurricane Norma seen strengthening as it churns toward Baja California https://t.co/Lmxma53yeR https://t.co/oWxG9gOg3K
We have Hurricane Norma, which is rapidly intensifying and could hit Cabo San Lucas, in the Pacific. In the Atlantic, newly-minted Tropical Storm Tammy, which may sideswipe Puerto Rico or hit the northern Lesser Antilles. https://t.co/WkHI9HhqCD
With NHC initiating advisories on Tropical Storm #Tammy, that brings our total storms in 2023 to 20. That ties 1933 for 4th most active hurricane season on record. We've been fortunate though that we only had one big hit on the U.S. (Idalia). #scwx #ncwx https://t.co/yVvCp4BpDD
Tropical Storm #Tammy has formed in the central tropical Atlantic. For only the 4th time on record (since 1851), two named storms (#Sean was the other) have formed in the tropical Atlantic (south of 20°N, east of 60°W) in October. Other three years are 1878, 1887, 1995. https://t.co/ikIIcImqSh
