A strong geomagnetic storm has allowed the northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, to be seen in the Carolinas and other parts of the United States. Photographers captured stunning images of the aurora, showcasing broad, diffuse red light. The phenomenon was mostly visible with long camera exposures and not with the naked eye. The northern lights were also visible in Virginia. The event was considered rare for the area. There will be another opportunity to watch the aurora on Tuesday night.
More numbers for the ongoing auroral activity that produced amazing views across wide swaths of the planet. https://t.co/GN1YGbw3Ye

Aurora in Virginia on Sunday night? Affirmative. Photographers captured broad, diffuse red light. This was mostly visible with long camera exposures not with naked eyes. Will thread some great examples here. This first one is from @Chris_FukudaWx from @ShenandoahNPS. 1/x https://t.co/DmXlDjiJMO

A 6 sec exposure on my phone shows a verrrry faint reddish glow on parts of the northern horizon, looking north from Reidsville NC. Probably from the light pollution instead of a whiff of aurora, but the stars are pretty tonight at least. https://t.co/aAmtTanQLC
