The National Weather Service (NWS) is transitioning from radar reflectivity composite to the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model for precipitation and flash flood forecasts across the contiguous United States. The forecasts are accompanied by simulated radar reflectivity and flash flood guidance overlay. The transition is facilitated by RealEarth™, UWSSEC, and UWCIMSS. Additionally, a new chip coated with man-made diamonds promises smaller, more powerful radars. The radar system is of concern in the NWP area, and a new weather system is spinning in the Caribbean.
