Meteorologists are predicting a thaw for late January and the start of February, but the polar vortex could bring unpredictable and problematic weather due to lingering effects of a polar vortex disruption and the presence of El Niño. A positive Arctic Oscillation and a strengthening polar vortex are expected to lead to a warm start to February, but major cold is forecasted for much of the nation from the second week of February into March. California is expected to experience a potentially very active period for weather in early February, with a significant atmospheric river event and a classic El Niño pattern.
A Pacific jet extension will roar across the Pacific to begin February, bringing the potential for a significant atmospheric river event for California and the West Coast. A classic El Niño pattern. Stay tuned. https://t.co/zmWsur9bI4
Growing ensemble confidence in potentially very active period for California weather in early Feb. Things will dry out for next 7-10 days but then it looks like it's off to the races w/a major Pacific jet extension that will be oriented more directly toward CA vs one in Dec.#CAwx https://t.co/DHG9SGQnyi
With a positive Arctic Oscillation and a strengthening polar vortex, the stage is set for a warm start to February. BUT lingering effects of a PV disruption, as well as the presence of El Niño, will make things unpredictable and problematic in the East. https://t.co/na0BFJMxQM

During Jan thaw, storms pound the west coast later next week into the week after Major cold to develop again for much of the nation but centered more east from 2cnd week of Feb into March. 1) stratwarm from Jan 2) mjo rotation 3)teleconnections line up 4 ) feb nino analogs https://t.co/rkvzb67vTI
We've just had a couple wild weeks of severe winter weather, with multiple winter storms and Arctic blasts. A thaw is coming for late Jan and the start of Feb. What comes after that? The answer may lie in the polar vortex. @MatthewCappucci explains: https://t.co/G6VwRY8KS0
